The Republic and Utopia essays
The Republic and Utopia essays The main features of Platos Republic and Thomas Mores Utopia can be outlined by examining their economic systems, laws and enforcement procedures, and their societal responsibilities. These three factors collectively considered as well as independently explored can bring light to their strength and weaknesses, characteristics and aspirations, and the overall desirability and pleasantness of life. Each single feature can only give a glimpse into these two Utopias, however, undivided these four topics put together can give an accurate representation to allow for comparison in both the lifestyle and functionality of both civilizations. When reading Utopia its not difficult to see where More picked up some of Platos writings. Both take a somewhat similar stance in their economic systems when it comes to the distribution of goods and the acquisition of wealth. In Mores Utopia, there is no currency except that which is controlled directly by the state and limited for the use in purposes such as war and the purchasing of iron. Platos Republic limits wealth with the bronze class and denies all material possessions from the Gold and Silver. Everything is publicly owned and shared communally in both Utopias. ...Where every man has a right to everything, they all know that if care is taken to keep the public stores full, no private man can want anything; for among them there is no unequal distribution, so that no man is poor, none in necessity; and though no man has anything, yet they are all rich; for what can make a man so rich as to lead a serene and cheerful life, free from anxieties. (More, Book II: Of the Religio ns of the Utopians) With the absence of money, the playing field would not only be level but completely equal in every sense. ...We must not let them be receivers of gifts or lovers of money, Plato wrote (Plato, Book 3). Both men agreed that money had the potential t...

Balmer Series Definition in Science
Balmer Series Definition in Science The Balmer series is the portion of the emission spectrum of hydrogen that represents electron transitions from energy levels n 2 to n 2. These are four lines in the visible spectrum. They are also known as the Balmer lines. The four visible Balmer lines of hydrogen appear at 410 nm, 434 nm, 486 nm and 656 nm. These are caused by photons produced by electrons in excited states transitioning to more stable energy levels. There are also multiple ultraviolet Balmer lines that have wavelengths shorter than 400 nm. The spectrum becomes continuous approaching 364.6 nm (ultraviolet). Note: While Balmer discovered four visible lines, five other hydrogen spectral series were later discovered for values of n besides 2. The Balmer series in especially important in astronomy. The lines are seem emitted by many stellar objects because most of the universe consists of the element hydrogen. The series is used to help determine the surface temperature of stars. Self Reliance Term Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words
Self Reliance - Term Paper Example Self-Reliance ââ¬â how to get that? The primary necessity for the presence of self-reliance in a leader is to understand what one is capable of doing and believe in the virtues of his/her values. If such belief is created within oneself, then there is every possibility for the emotional quotient of the human brain to generate energy that would motivate the leader to back every decision he makes and subsequently act on those decisions. So, it could be said that behind every successful organization or every successful team activity, there would always be a person who is able to display his motivations, inner self and as a result, will be capable of telling others who they are, why they do such things and what he wants them to do to in order to succeed in that activity. Any leader who is independent enough to act on his decisions can be considered as self-reliant. Advantage A major advantage of a self-reliant and an independent person is that they would be totally in control of thei r emotions while taking decisions. As a result, any problem could be dealt by them in a balanced manner and such a person would arrive at any decision only by understanding the pros and cons of that decision and would not allow any emotional leverage to pull them to any side. Also, when such decisions are made, one could easily motivate others in the team to act to their full potential because, they would be clearly aware that true and hard work will turn successful and be rewarded under the self-reliant personââ¬â¢s leadership. One exemplary example of self-reliance being the primary force of leadership could be the life and struggle of Gandhi, popularly called as the ââ¬Ëfather of Indiaââ¬â¢ (Chadha, 1997). Gandhi brought into a country filled with chaos and fight, a sense of peacefulness and unity only through his self-reliance. He was not a well-built man and he was totally ignorant about the artilleries and nuances of war, but he was completely aware of what he is capa ble of. He understood his capabilities and fought with that. He always believed that to free India from the British, it can never be done through violence and action. Only with non-violent movements and consistent protests can there be any sort of positive movement. He stood in front of the British, took their beatings and still continued to fight in a non-violent way. His was a perfect example of how a leader can unite a nation just by his determination and self-reliance. His practices and preaches were clearly a result of understanding of his own true-self and the success that was tasted in the form of Indiaââ¬â¢s freedom was actually a direct result of his self-reliant attitude (Chadha, 1997). It is evidently clear that from the above example, that unless one understands the true nature of himself, one can never become self-reliant and thus a good leader. It is an age old truth and even Emerson (1967), in his poem ââ¬Å"Self-Relianceâ⬠, written several years ago has clea rly iterated this truth by stating that no man, irrespective of how much ever he tries and copies the attitude, living way or the behavior of other person, can never become another person and can only remain as his true self (Emerson, 1967). Negative-side There is another issue that could be considered as one of the negative effects of being self-reliant. If a person believes

Qatar was the best choies to host the world cup in 2022 Essay
Qatar was the best choies to host the world cup in 2022 - Essay Example The world cup is the worldââ¬â¢s biggest sporting event and the potential of the sport changing its legacy in Qatar is clearly evident. The country boosts 12 venues that can revolutionize the worldââ¬â¢s most followed sport. All the stadiums will harness the power of the sunââ¬â¢s rays to provide cool environment for players and fans by converting solar energy into electricity that will be used to cool both fans ad players. In addition, when there will be no matches being played in the stadiums, the solar installations in the stadium will export energy onto the power grid but when the matches are being played, the stadiums will be supplied with energy from the grid. This is the strongest point for the stadiums carbon neutrality (Farah, par 1). The world cup is always held in summer. During this time, the Qatarââ¬â¢s temperature reaches almost 40 degrees Celsius. The high temperatures are the Qatarââ¬â¢s number one selling point. With their riches and technological advancements, Qatar is planning to control the temperatures within the various stadiums. There are also plans to upgrade their sleeves as well (Ballantyne, par 1). Consequently, five stadia had already been proposed as early as March, 2010. The various stadia will employ cooling technology capable of reducing temperatures within the stadium up to 20 degrees Celsius. The cooling technologies will also be used in fan zones, training pitches and walkways between metro stations and the stadiums. Further, Qatar boasts several stadia. Qatar university stadium is capable of hosting about 43,500 persons. The stadium has intricate golden patterns to reflect the true beauty and extravagance of Arabian culture. The stadium is also based on the outskirts of the capital city, Doha. Its modern and world class facilities will be capable of hosting the demands of footballââ¬â¢s most elite players (Farah, par 1). Other stadia planned for use in Qatar include Al-Khor Stadium which is located

Genting Group Essay Example for Free
Genting Group Essay The Genting Group was founded by the late Tan Sri (Dr.) Lim Goh Tong in 1965. It is one of Malaysiaââ¬â¢s top multinational corporations. The Genting Group involves in several different sectors such as the leisure hospitality, power generation, oil palm plantation, property development, biotechnology and oil gas sectors. Tan Sri (Dr.) Lim Goh Tong started his project with the building of a 20-kilometre private access road, across tough mountainous terrains from the foothills to the summit of Mount Ulu Kali, located at 2,000 metres above sea level and also the first highlands resort on the mountain in Malaysia which formerly named Genting Highlands Resort. For a corporation to grow, business objectives are important because objectives give direction to a business. The Genting Group had been operating for 47years till today and we can see it with our eye that it indeed grows from strength to strength. This is because The Genting Group had clearly stated out their goals and objectives and did well in achieving it. One of the goals of The Genting Group is ââ¬Å"Care for the Communityâ⬠. To achieve this goal, The Genting Group had set the objectives to help the community. The Genting Group done a great job in achieving the objective in the year 2011 by dedicated amount more than RM25 million to many charities and community. The organizations that benefit from The Genting Group are Malaysian Liver Foundation, MAA-Medicare Kidney Foundation, OrphanCare Baby Hatch Programme, Malaysian Crime Prevention Foundation, Malaysia Diabetes Association and The Federation of Chinese Associations Malaysia. As for the organizations in foreign country included The Straits Times School Pocket Money Fund, The Business Times Budding Artists Fund, Heartware Network, Milk Fund and the Jane Goodall Institute in Singapore; the GREaT Foundation, BBCââ¬â¢s Children In Need and Cancer UK through Race for Life events, Cancer UK, Comic Relief, Marie Curie Cancer Care, Japanese Red Cross and also the Japanese Earthquake Relief. Besides that when the Sultanah of Pahang DYMM Sultanah Hajjah Kalsom binti Abdullah officially launched the Orang Asli Che Wong Cultural Building in Lanchang, Pahang on 19 November 2011, The Genting Group donated a 2,800-square-foot cultural building which consists of a classroom, an exhibition room and a hall for performances that cost a total of RM180, 000 and the Genting employees also lend a helping hand by volunteered in the landscaping and beautificationà efforts. Furthermore in Malaysia, the Group participated in the Roti 1Malaysia charity project. This project is successful with the kind sponsored of bread from Resorts World Genting together with other hotels and bakeries in the Klang Valley and distribute to over 50 orphanages and homes weekly. Therefore from here we can see that The Genting Group had made their effort in helping the community generously and sincerely. This is shown when it is not only the corporation care the community but also the employees of Genting Group involve themselves too. Although The Genting Group had did well in their objectives, however I suggest that The Genting Group could set out another objective in order to achieve the goal, ââ¬Å"maintaining long-term sustainable growth in our core businessesâ⬠. This objective is basically to care the customers, for example, ââ¬Å"Provide the best environment and services to customersâ⬠and this can be achieved by improving the casino. If we compare between the Resort World Sentosa Casino and Genting Highlands casinos, we can obviously see that the Genting Highlands casinos are not so good than the other one. This is because of the environment and ventilation. The ventilation of Genting Highlands casino was poor and the air is stuffy. This may be cause of the casinos is not smoke free and therefore is full of cigarette smoke. The decoration of the Genting Highlands casinos are more in the 80s, it looks old and tradition. On the other hand, the Resort World Sentosa Casino is more clean and good ventilation. This is because the casino was divided into smoking area and non-smoking area. The decoration of the casino is grand and the environment is more comfortable and relaxing compare with Genting Highlands casinos. The Resort World Sentosa Casino is more strict compare with Genting Highlands Casinos. In The Resort World Sentosa Casino, the security will not let customers without passport to enter the casino but for Genting Highlands Casinos, the securities will not check every single customer, therefore there may be underage youngster enter the casinos. The Genting Highlands Casinos should immediately take action in order to provide a better environment for their customers to ensure customers loyalty that can increase the profit of the company. As a conclusion, The Genting Group did do well in overall. It provides an array of enjoyment and fun for all people, from children to senior citizen.

Philosophy and the Dialectic of Modernity :: Philosophical Essays
Philosophy and the Dialectic of Modernity ABSTRACT: Habermas' social philosophy can now be perceived in its oppositional structures and their symbolic meaning. His repetition of structural opposition finds its expression in the symbolism which pervades The Philosophic Discourse of Modernity in the opposition between the dreaded myth of the Dialectic of Enlightenment and the redemptive fantasy of the path yet to be taken. More significant for the intellectual culture of modernity is the neglect, by erasure on the part of this esteemed philosopher, of the great drama of philosophy in our time. This is the drama occasioned by the dialectical struggle, rushing to climax in the 20th Century, between Enlightenment reason and its Counterenlightenment opponent. The struggle between these philosophical constellations is refracted in the great wars of this century. Thus the drama of the philosophical thought of the century and its historical development is lost. The philosophic discourse of modernity has yet to be written. Its text, o nce it has been freed from the tenacity of ideological hostilities and their erasures and concealing circumlocutions, will at the same time provide the sought-for foundation for social philosophy and a just society: it is the philosophic framework of Modernity itself which is the foundation of all modern philosophies, in the dialectic of Enlightenment and its Counterenlightenment other. The social philosophy of Jurgen Habermas, outstanding philosopher and master dialectician of our time, has an immediate appeal to American philosophers, educated in the history of the Protestant migrations to the New World in search of religious freedom; educated also in the Founding Fathers who drew up a constitution for a modern republic heralded by Thomas Jefferson's Declaration of Independence proclaiming the universality of human equality and natural rights; educated as well in the social philosophy of American pragmatism, in which Enlightenment principles of democracy and science become normative social processes. The appeal of Habermas to American philosophers long acculturated in the Enlightenment tradition is that of a voice speaking for reason and justice; he stands forth philosophically on behalf of "rehabilitating the Enlightenment" in the face of various current modes of thought engaged in its undermining. Habermas has been widely commended for his strong unequivocal stand as a German intellectual against the Nazi movement and the Holocaust it produced, and against any revisionist circumlocutions seeking to obscure those atrocities. Habermas is also commended for his repudiation of Martin Heidegger's complicity with Nazism and his retreat to linguistic mysticism.

Characterization of Mr. Jack Stapleton in Doyle’s Hound of the Baskervilles
Authors use the four methods of Characterization to develop and describe characters in their story by using the narration and the thoughts of other participants to show how the character looks, behaves, and sounds. In The Hound of the Baskervilles, author, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle utilizes Characterization to bring to life the antagonist of the story, Mr. Jack Stapleton. Normally, an author uses physical appearance to intimate the personality of the character. In Doyle's book, the narrator describes Mr. Jack Stapletonââ¬â¢s physical appearance: ââ¬Å"He was a small, slim, clean-shaven, prim-faced man, flaxen-haired, and lean-jawed, between thirty and forty years of age, dressed in a gray suit, and wearing a straw hat. A tin box for botanical specimens hung over his shoulder and he carried a green butterfly-net in one of his hands. â⬠(Doyle 89) While reading this it is impossible to detect the evil in Mr. Stapleton. Doyle uses the calm facade of Mr. Stapleton to trick the read er into thinking that there is nothing odd or malevolent about him yet he is a scheming manipulative villain. One cannot judge simply by outward appearance, for his looks deceive the reader which is why other methods are used to determine a character. A character's speech, thoughts and actions can reveal more about who they are and their personality. For example in Doyleââ¬â¢s book, Mr. Stapletonââ¬â¢s actions and words show his personality more explicitly, ââ¬Ëâ⬠But, dear me whatââ¬â¢s this? Somebody hurt? Notââ¬âdonââ¬â¢t tell me that it is our friend Sir Henry! ââ¬â¢ He hurried past me and stooped over the dead man.I heard intake of his breath and the cigar fell from his fingers. ââ¬ËWhoââ¬âwho is this? ââ¬â¢ he stammered ââ¬ËIt is Seldon, the man who escaped from Princetown. ââ¬â¢ Stapleton turned a ghastly face upon us, but by a supreme effort he had overcome his amazement and his disappointment. â⬠(187) This makes Stapletonâ⬠â¢s character more understandable by giving an inking of his greatest desire, the want for Sir Henry Baskerville dead. It is possible to note this because Doyle shows that Stapleton is obviously disappointed to find out that the dead man is not Sir Henry.Actions demonstrate a lot about the characters identity. But more tools are needed to ascertain full knowledge of a persona. The third method of Characterization is using the thoughts or comments of other figures in the book to tell more about the character. In The Hound of the Baskervilles, Mrs. Stapleton describes him, ââ¬Ëââ¬Å"â⬠¦ Oh this villain! See how he has treated me! ââ¬Ë She shot out her arms out from her sleeves, and we saw with horror that they were all mottled with bruises. ââ¬Å" (216-217) The statement of Mrs. Stapleton describing Mr. Stapleton as being a villain for hurting her is an obvious sign of malevolence and clearly shows his disposition This is not the last method of Characterization for all fo ur are needed to completely identify a character. The last method of Characterization is given by the narrator through a firsthand comment on the person To finalize the identification of Mr. Stapleton Sir Arthur Conan Doyle provides this statement from the narrator's point of view, ââ¬Å"But there was no sign within it of that desperate and defiant villain whom we expected to seeâ⬠(215) this final example dictates that Mr. Stapleton was indeed a desperate and defiant villain and verifies the way that Mr. Stapleton perceived as a foul and wicked man. Many methods are used by authors to give life to their extraordinary characters. Showing great skill in the area of Characterization, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle brings forth intriguing and thought provoking personas that make his tale, The Hound of the Baskervilles so unique to readers everywhere.

Perceptions of Children who Present Challenging Behavior Essay
Challenging Behavior among children stems out from various intricate and interrelated factors. Often times, the family and the educators are not able to properly address the needs of these children due to the lack of information, education and support. Strain and Joseph (2004) revealed that 73% of educators perceived that challenging behaviors among children has been significantly increasing. But surprisingly, educators are facing problems and some are even not that willing to help and assist children with challenging behavior. Strain and Joseph (2004) 70% revealed that teachers who handle students with challenging behavior claimed that children with such make them feel stressed, while 60% said that it has a negative effect on their job satisfaction. The case of June (Laursen, 2005) reveals how educators perceive children with challenging behavior, and how a child who encounters behavior difficulties relates with her peers and her educators. Most of her teachers are not that positive in terms of doing an extra work in terms of helping her overcome her difficulties in school because of her attitude. As such, an education plan was set in order to help her. June was made to sign a behavioral contract that furthers the agreement that she should ââ¬Å"stay awake in school, not yell at adults, not assault anyone and attend the group meeting all day (Laursen, 2005, para 2). According to Reichle and Wacker (1997), the most effective venue for the assessment of challenging behavior could be conducted in natural environments such as ââ¬Å"home, school and local communityâ⬠(para 2). also emphasized that Communications Based Interventions are the best approach in terms of dealing with challenging behavior (para 4). The Positive Behavior Support (PBS) is tailored to meet the specific needs of the child and also takes into careful consideration all of the contexts in which problems with regard to challenging behaviors emerge. The model devised by Dunlap and Fox (1999) as cited from Fox, Dunlap and Powell (2002) creates an Individualized Support Program (ISP) that seeks to help the family and the childââ¬â¢s care givers in order to change his or her difficult behavior.

Cigarette Should Be Banned Essay Example
Cigarette Should Be Banned Essay Example Cigarette Should Be Banned Essay Cigarette Should Be Banned Essay Cigarettes Should be Banned Smoking cigarettes has been a worldwide habit for a long time. According to the World Health Organization report, about 2 billion people smoke all over the world, 48% men and 12% women and even a number of child smokers. Everyone knows the harm of cigarettes and many countries have published smoking bans. The Himalayan kingdom of Bhutan was the first one to forbid tobacco sales (BBC News). I strongly approve of the cigarette ban because cigarette is bad for peopleââ¬â¢s health and the litter will cause environmental pollution. I do not smoke, so I have no idea how exactly people feel when they smoke. Some people smoke to keep their weight, others need cigarettes to focus on something, and some believe smoking is pleasant and refreshing. There is a funny saying that Chinese heavy smokers always say, ââ¬Å" smoking after dinner is more than living god. â⬠No matter the reason that people like smoking, they should not ignore the disadvantages of cigarettes. My grandfather died from lung cancer in 2008. He had smoked more than fifty years. I would not say that he died because of smoking, but we cannot deny that lung cancer is indeed a tobacco-related disease. Smoking speeds up the process of aging and each cigarette smoked costs smokers six minutes of their life (HubPages). Every year, tobacco kills almost six million people, which includes five million users and ex users and even more that 600,000 nonsmokers affected by second-hand smoke. ââ¬Å"Approximately one person dies every six seconds due to tobacco and this accounts for one in 10 adult deaths,â⬠According to the World Health Organization (Tobacco, Media centre). Beside lung cancer, many other diseases caused by smoking such as blockage of the arteries, which causes strokes, heart attacks and impotence (Health Canada), high blood pressure and chronic bronchitis. Cigarettes contain nicotine, tar, and carbon monoxide. Nicotine is highly addictive, and if people stop smoking temporarily then that person will become lethargic. According to research, nicotine from one cigarette can kill a mouse. To nonsmokers, even though they do not touch any cigarettes they might get some diseases as well. For instance, a father smokes a lot, a mother does not smoke, and their baby may have congenital malformation or even worse: die young. You cannot blame anyone but the cigarettes. Some families come apart because of smoking. Sometimes, teenagers learn to smoke because they see some adults doing it, or someone passes the cigarettes to them. Thus, cigarette smoke not only causes diseases, but also misguides young generations. No matter the smokers or nonsmokers, as long as they got diseases resulted from cigarette use, they would pay the medical fee to cure their diseases. So, another bad effect is spending unnecessary money for curing diseases result from cigarette smoke. Everyone cares about his or her healthy problems caused by cigarettes. But is there anyone concerned about the continuing pollution of the environment? Cigarettes do have a big effect on that pollution. Air pollution is one of the most important topics that people pay attention to. No matter the cigarette smoke or second hand smoke, they all belong to indoor air pollution. Tobacco Control once reported, cigarette smoke emits 10 times more air pollution than any diesel car exhaust. In addition, when cigarettes burn, they release nicotine, carbon monoxide, particulates and 4,000 different types of chemicals, which are bad for peopleââ¬â¢s health into the air. Also, the cigarette butts thrown on the ground or on the beaches can release the harmful chemicals into the air and water. Besides air and water pollution, deforestation happened in order to increase farmland for tobacco growth and cure tobacco plants. ââ¬Å"An estimated 200,000 hectares of forests and woodlands are cut down each year because of tobacco farming,â⬠According to Bellagio statement in June 1995 (Environmental issues). There is even more deforestation today than before. Tobacco plants leech nutrients from the soil also causing environmental deterioration just like fertilizers and pesticides pollute the environment. The tobacco factories produce a huge amount of waste almost everyday as well. The global tobacco industry produced about 2. 3 billion kilograms of waste and 209 million kilograms of chemical waste in 1995 (Environmental issues). Numbers do not lie and these numbers do not even include the immense amount of litter resulting from non-biodegradable cigarette butts. Cigarette butts indeed are a curse. People throw cigarette butts anywhere including some places that have inflammable material such as forests. Cigarette butts cause about 100,000 U. S. and 1 million global fires per year. And cigarette fire causes an estimated 30% of U. S. death because of fire and 10% of global death burdens by fire (Davis). In 1987, the Greater Khingan Range in China, which is a huge forest, burned by fires for 28 days. Since that day, people in China finally noticed that the power of fires. Fewer and fewer people throw cigarette butts into forests any more. But there are still some who do not remember the lessons and litter cigarette butts in hotels, schools and theatres. Almost every year has news reported about fires caused from cigarette butts in public places. Also, cigarette butts affect societyââ¬â¢s appearance, and there is not anyone who likes to live around cigarette butts. In addition, the cigarette industry spends billions each year on advertising and promotion. According to the Centers for Disease Control, there are $9. 94 billion total spent in 2008 and $27 million spent a day in 2008 (Smoking and Tobacco Use). Tobacco use cost the United States billions of dollars each year, of what cigarette smoking costs above $193 billion and secondhand smoke costs more that $10 billion (Smoking Statistics). Besides that, every state in America spent a lot of money on tobacco control. Every cloud has a silver lining. Federal cigarette tax increases will raise additional revenue of government and strengthen development of economy. As long as economy develops, it will push tobacco marketing forward. As the economy grows, agriculture will expand, and help increase employment opportunities. Nowadays, more and more people want to quit smoking. Among adult smokers, approximately 69% of smokers want to quit completely and about 52% of smokers attempted to quit in 2010 (Morbidity and Mortality). People become politically awakened little by little, and this is a good start to help government ban cigarettes. People should begin from every aspect of their daily life. For example, stop passing cigarette to another people; stop smoking at home or in front of children, and find something else to divert attention on cigarettes.
